Medallists
Great Britain finished in 36th position in the final medal rankings, with one gold and 15 total medals. This was its worst medals haul since 1952 and its worst ever numerical ranking in the table (due to the greatly increased numbers of competing countries since the 1970s) and left Great Britain with many questions about the overall state of sport in the country. Ahead of Great Britain in equal 34th stood both Algeria and Ethiopia with 2 gold and one bronze; just three total medals to GB's 16. This sparked a debate in Britain as to whether a points system should be used to classify NOCs rather than most golds, as if a 10-5-2 system had been used, Britain would have placed 16th, just ahead of Greece despite winning 4 gold medals.[citation needed]
