 Abuse response

Wikipedia:Abuse Response is community iniative for the reporting and investigation of abuse originating from anonymous IP addresses. Those IP addresses are then reported to the service provider with jurisdiction over the IP address in hopes to counter and even deter abuse to Wikipedia.

  • AR is not for blocking accounts. If an anonymous user is presently vandalizing Wikipedia, please go to WP:AIV.
  • We do not handle sock puppet identification. For that, see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations.

How to file a report:

1. Verify that the following criteria has been met:

  • The IP address has been blocked at least five times
  • The IP has made abusive contributions within the past six months

2. Replace "IP" below with the IP you are reporting and click "Report IP"

  • For multiple entries enter the most recent active IP address or address range
  • For IP ranges, replace the wildcard number with an x (i.e., 192.168.x.x or 192.168.1.x) for whichever number differs

3. Fill out the top lines of the report, adding the information required
4. Save the page

Coordinators

If you need help with either submitting an Abuse Response or processing an Abuse Response, please ask on the talk page or message one of the editors listed below.

Process

The processing of an Abuse Response case has three phases.
  • Under investigation: Once an alert is made, it is opened by an investigator, who begins an investigation and compiles a Response for use when contacting the organization responsible for the IP number.
  • In contact: Once a case has been investigated and a Response prepared, the case is passed on to a contactor. The contactor then attempts to contact the provider or organization responsible for the IP address. The contactor explains the situation to the organization and points them to the prepared Response. The contactor remains in contact with the organization, most likely by email, to answer any further questions or provide other requested information.

Once the contactor has made contact with the provider, the case remains open as long as contact continues. If the provider successfully resolves the complaint, then the contactor closes the case, with a summary of the result. If the provider is unwilling to cooperate, the contactor notes the case, and closes it with a summary.
