Task Forces
Guidelines
Article names
The name of the article should be the current, formal title of the place. Other accepted names can be indicated in the first sentence with bold text. If the article name differs from the NRHP name, the NRHP name should usually appear as one of those bolded alternative names. If the article includes a NRHP infobox (usually helpful), then the NRHP name should appear as the title of the NRHP infobox. If there are multiple places with the same name, the article usually should be entitled Name (City, State).
- For example, Stacy's Tavern or Magnolia Manor (Cairo, Illinois).
However, in the county or state list of NRHPs, the NRHP name for the site should be used. If the article name is different, then this NRHP name needs to be pipelinked and/or to point to a redirect to the correct article name.
Wikilinks
- All the separate lists for each state or territory need to have their blue links checked, to make sure they are linked to unique articles. Disambiguation is required for a number of articles, especially common names for the local "Post Office" and train stations or churches. Make use of piped links for an existing article with a different name than the title that appears on the NRHP.
- Click on a red link that appears on the list. From the resulting page, "search for the article in Wikipedia" to possibly locate an existing article with a different name about the building or place. The name on the list should match the name on the NRHP database - with corrected spelling, as required (Refer to: Other useful links, below). Use a piped link from the existing article name to the redlink on the list. In this way, the Palmer-Perkins House (Boundary Increase) will be linked directly to the Palmer-Perkins House article, for example.

NHL articles by State
The purpose of this manual tabulation is to track and encourage development of NHL articles, listed in state-specific liss of NHLs themselves listed at List of National Historic Landmarks by state.
- Every NHL deserves an article.
- Certainly each should get a photo or other image.
- NRHP infoboxes are suitable for most but perhaps not all. Some articles already have another infobox type, it may or may not be helpful to add a NRHP infobox. However NRHP infobox often can be added below another infobox, perhaps with only key fields filled out.
- NRHP infoboxes now can separately include NHL designation date as a field.
- Almost every NHL article can include a link to the National Park Service summary about that NHL, for example [NHL link for Mar-A-Lago site]. To be excluded only if the NHL summary is not available. The count indicates number of links.
- For many NHLs, the National Park Service has a PDF copy of the text of the site's nomination for NHL status, or an "Inventory/Registration" form. This can be linked from the article. See [NRHP text PDF link example for Mar-A-Lago]. The count indicates number of links.
- For almost as many NHLs, there is also a PDF of photographs accompanying the site's nomination or inventory/registration. For example, see [NRHP photos PDF link for Mar-A-Lago]. The count indicates number of links.

Reviews done...no guarantees that I didn't miss something, but here's a list to start with! Lvklock
- Wow! I know how much it is to take Alaska and Hawaii into a better state, my head hurts at how many you've reviewed. dm (talk) 20:29, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Following no longer tallies photos which are covered in similar list NHL photos instead.
The Massachusetts list needs major fixup, is one of few not started from table report including coordinates. In process now. First working on newly separated List of NHLs in Boston. Table reports mostly merged, coordinates added. Open for others to edit as they like.
Sanfranman59 fixed up date formatting using date-sortable DTS2 format in 33 area lists having day-dates. Besides MA the others show just year, and for these it is also likely that the dates have not been verified, and may reflect year of NRHP listing not NHL designation as needed. So verification/correction/day-date adding from the NPS NHL_list PDF document is needed, for 20 area lists:
While going thru the NPS NHL_list, confirm/fix names showing to be the NHL program name for site.

I broke out the USS Arizona (shipwreck) (which is an NHL) from the USS Arizona Memorial (which is not, but is on the NRHP). By the way, the USS Missouri is *not* eligible for an NHL since it was modernized... dm (talk) 14:30, 2 July 2008 (UTC) Made a whole bunch of other corrections dm (talk) 08:11, 3 July 2008 (UTC) I think I've fixed all of the articles. Please double check me. I'm going to bed now dm (talk) 09:59, 3 July 2008 (UTC). Much improved! I fixed up Kawaiahao and struck it from the above list. Am checking, slowly from back to front, did #30-#33. For all HI articles, I have to insist on adding NHLsum ref, and/or putting it into standard format. Without NHLsum, there is no documentation of the NHL name of the site, which needs also to be mentioned as alternative name in intro. --Doncram |

- Good article reassessment
- Peer review
I've listed this article for peer review because it is just about ready to go to FAC, but still needs some fine tuning before then.
Thanks, Niagara Don't give up the ship 19:27, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Ruhrfisch comments: As requested here are some comments - this is quite good overall, but needs some improvements before it will be ready for FAC. Here are some suggestions with FAC in mind.
- There are several places where the article needs to provide more detail, for example in the lead I would change the second sentence The [current] Capitol was designed in [1906? in] a Beaux-Arts style with Renaissance themes throughout.
-
- Added Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- I would also add years to Before the capital was moved to Harrisburg, the seat of government for the state was in Philadelphia and, then, in Lancaster. and to The first capitol burned down in 1897 and the second was left unfinished when funding ran out.
-
- Added Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- There are several places that do not have references but will need them in FAC - for example the last four sentences of the first paragraph of the Huston Capitol section need a ref, or three of the four last sentences (per paragraph) in the Interior section also need refs.
- There is a picture of the Supreme Court's stained glass dome on Commons - could that be used here? I also really like File:Harrisburg, Pennsylvania State Capital Building.jpg (view from across the river) and wonder if it could be added to the Restoration and preservation section. They are not great, but I will upload the two pictures I have of the rotunda (they are of the balconies to the right and left of the grand staircase)
-
- Added the skyline photo Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- There is nothing in the history from the graft scandal in 1906 or so (dates of convictions might help) to listing on the NRHP in 1977 (about a 70 year gap). This could be a problem at FAC as one of the criteria is that the article be comprehensive
- I also wondered if a bit more detail on operations of the House, Senate and Supreme Court could be added? Number of legislators, usually times to meet, their complete inability to agree to a budget after 80 plus days of trying... (OK, not the last)
-
- Added some more details, but wasn't able to find usual meeting times (I do know sessions can take place anytime between the first Tuesday in January and November 30). You could take solace in knowing politics in PA isn't like what it was a century ago ;-) Niagara Don't give up the ship 00:42, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I do not watch peer reviews, so if you have questions or comments, please contact me on my talk page. Yours, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:37, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
Some more I am reading the article more closely and have done some minor copyedits, mostly to add some context (please revert if I have intorduced any errors or made things worse). Here are a few more suggestions:
- I would add the year(s) to this With both the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the recently-formed United States Congress occupying Independence Hall, the state legislature considered proposals for moving the seat of the state government. (mid to late 1770s?) and would also add when Harrisburg was established / founded in the next sentence or shortly therafter.
-
- Added Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- In the Hills Capitol section I would make clear when the actual move of the seat of government was (1810? 1822?) I believe ABraham Lincoln's coffin lay in state there too (on its way to Springfield), which might be worth a mention.
-
- Added. Lincoln was there, twice, actually. Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- In the Cobb capitol section, I would add the location of this building relative to the Hills capitol and to the Huston capitol (was it on the same site or nearby?) I assume they tore at least parts of it down, though it says some of it was to be reused in the new building, in the Huston Capitol section it says Groundbreaking of the Huston Capitol was on November 2, 1902, on the site where the Hills Capitol had formerly stood. which at least makes it sound like the Cobb was in a different place(??)
-
- I'm not able to confirm whether the Cobb Capitol was located away from the remains of the Hills Capitol (I could have misunderstood it), so have removed it for now. The Huston Capitol, I believe, was quite literally built around it. Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- MOS:HEAD says to avoid repeating the name of the article or sections in the headers. I am not sure if Hills Capitol etc. violate this or not - probably OK as is, but would "Hills building" work?
-
- Both other FA state capitols use variations of "1st capitol", "2nd capitol" and "3rd capitol" as section headers, if those would be better. Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- WP:ACCESS also says not to left justify images under a level three or four header, so the left image of the Cobb Capitol may need to be moved.
-
- Moved Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- In Graft scandal could the year(s) of the convictions and lengths of prison sentences be added?
-
- Added Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- When were the grounds laid out and when was the Eighth ward leveled? Things like this could be added to the History section (assuming it was after the dedication - I also note that the statues flanking the entrance were added in 1909, so perhaps a sentence or mention of the ongoing work after the dedication could be added (trying to fill the 70 year gap).
- Can the internal dimensions of the rotunda be given (height from floor to ceiling of the dome, circumfrence of the dome at base, that sort of thing)?
- It might be useful to describe the interior as if the reader were entering the building - first the rotunda, then where the House and Senat and Court are relative to the rotunda, etc. How many stories is the capitol? How many rooms does it have? That sort of thing.
Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:22, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
Final thought the more I think about it, the more I believe the history gap could be partly filled by moving some material from the Capitol Complex section to the History section. A framing sentence or two could be added ("Although the Capitol was originally designed to hold the offices for all the state's legislators, less than two decades after the dedication of the capitol new office space was required.") then add the South and North Office Buildings and the Archives and State Museum too. I also think a map of the complex would help, and can probably make one, but have a five map backlog right now, so it would take a while. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:23, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
- PS Just looked at Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex and there are a LOT of buildings listed there - should all of these be mentioned in the Capital COmplex section too? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:26, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
-
- I wasn't, as that's what the link at the top of section leads too. Niagara Don't give up the ship 04:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Finetooth comments: As requested, I'm adding my observations too. I seem to have my nitpick hat on this morning, and I've focused mostly on prose and style issues.
Lead
- When you're done making other changes to the article, you might think about slightly revising and expanding the lead. For example, I'd suggest inserting the names of the three capitols, which says, "The current Capitol is the third state capitol building to be in Harrisburg. The first capitol burned down in 1897 and the second was left unfinished when funding ran out." This might become "The current capitol, known as the Huston Capitol, is the third state capitol building constructed in Harrisburg. The first, the Hills Capitol, burned down in 1897, and the second, the Cobb Capitol, was left unfinished when funding ran out." This (or something similar) would work a brief mention of the first three main text sections into the lead. I'd also like to see something about the grounds, interior, and capitol complex worked into the lead so that it becomes more like a stand-alone summary of the whole article.
- One fairly easy way to invigorate the prose would be to flip sentences from passive voice to active voice where that is easy to do. When I'm working with government sources, I often slip into the passive because bureaucrats often write in the passive, perhaps to avoid trouble. It's safer for them to say things like "The lake was drained" as opposed to "Mayor Snaggle and his brother Rufus drained the lake." The actor(s) and a strong sense of action vanish when active is flipped to passive. It's easy to flip these if you know who the actor is. In the lead, the first good candidate for flipping is "The current capitol was designed by Joseph Miller Huston and was dedicated in 1906." This could become "Joseph Miller Huston designed the current capitol, dedicated in 1906." The first sentence of the "History" section could be flipped. It says, "The first government of the, then-Province of Pennsylvania was formed on October 28, 1682, by William Penn in Chester, Pennsylvania." This could become "William Penn formed the first government of the Province of Pennsylvania on October 28, 1682, in Chester, Pennsylvania". In the "Huston Capitol" section, I see "The new capitol was dedicated on October 4, 1906, by Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker." This could become "Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker dedicated the new capitol on October 4, 1906." Well, you see the pattern, and I think you can identify and flip quite a few more of these elsewhere in the article to good effect.
- "Capitol" with a big C is correct for the formal name, Pennsylvania State Capitol, I believe, but when it's used generically, I think it should be lower-cased. Thus "The Capitol houses the chambers for the... " should be "The capitol houses the chambers for the... ". The second paragraph of the lead begins, "The current Capitol is the third state capitol building to be in Harrisburg. The first capitol burned down in 1897 and the second was left unfinished when funding ran out." Here "capitol" appears both ways, with a big "C" and a little "c". I think these should all be little "c". "Hills Capitol", later in the article, is a formal title, so the big "C" looks right. Ditto for Cobb Capitol. But in the Cobb Capitol section, I see "Construction on the new Capitol began on May 2, 1898." I think "new capitol" is what you want in this case. Long story short, if you agree with my big C, little c analysis, you should probably change the renegades to make them consistent.
-
- Fixed Niagara Don't give up the ship 00:42, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- I also wonder if things like "State Office Buildings" should be capitalized as in "Most of the buildings are centered around the Capitol in Harrisburg, except for State Office Buildings in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Scranton, and Reading." Since "State Office Buildings" appears to be a generic description rather than a formal name, this should probably be little "s", "o" and "b" as well as little "c" on "capitol". Likewise "State Library" looks generic to me even though "State Museum of Pennsylvania" in the same sentence looks like the correct formal title (in title case, as you have it). I'm unsure about names like Rotunda and Grand Staircase. Are these merely descriptive (generic), or are they the official formal names?
-
- Both FA state capitols use lower case "rotunda" and "grand staircase". "State Library" should read as "State Library of Pennsylvania", but I omitted "of Pennsylvania", as it didn't seem right to repeat it so close to "State Museum of Pennsylvania". Niagara Don't give up the ship 00:42, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- In the "Interior" section, some of the quantities bigger than nine are written as words, whereas in earlier sections I see things like "22 flags" using digits. A good rule of thumb is to use digits for whole numbers bigger than nine unless, for consistency within a single sentence, you decide to use words for each instance. "It is the largest of the three chambers and was designed with an Italian Renaissance theme. The fourteen circular, stained glass windows in the House Chamber were created by William B. Van Ingen and the five murals in House Chamber were painted by Abbey. The largest of the murals is situated behind the Speaker's rostrum. Called the Apotheosis of Pennsylvania, it depicts twenty-eight famous Pennsylvanians." Here the first sentence is OK using "three", and the second is OK on grounds that maybe you want "five" spelled out and "fourteen" then has to be spelled out for internal consistency within the sentence. But later, "twenty-eight" should probably be 28 for consistency within the whole article. Ditto for 10 stained glass windows and 16 murals further down in the section.
Image placement
- On my computer screen, the stereo card image of President Roosevelt slightly overlaps two sections. This could be fixed by moving the image up by two or three lines. The Burden of Life image does the same thing, and the fix would be the same. The same problem occurs with the image of the interior of the capitol dome; if you move this one up a bit, be careful not to create a text sandwich. I suppose all of these things look somewhat different on different computers, so perfection may not be possible, but I thought I should mention what I am seeing.
I hope these few comments prove helpful. If so, please consider reviewing another article in a field of your choice. Finetooth (talk) 18:33, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Sources for information on National Register of Historic Places
Lists of NRHP listings and basic facts about them
Lists of NRHP listings are available, organized by state and county, within List of National Register of Historic Places entries. For example, National Register of Historic Places listings in Onondaga County, New York is one list with pictures for some of the entries. Almost all of the 79,000 NRHP listings in the U.S. are probably listed on one of these lists, thanks to continued efforts of WP:NRHP members, but the majority of the NRHP sites are "red-links" with no articles yet. (About 1600 of the 2400 or so NRHPs that are also National Historic Landmarks have blue-links already.)
To find address lists for NRHP listings in a given area, it may sometimes be easiest to work with data available from NationalRegisterOfHistoricPlaces.Com, a commercial site that serves up some of the public domain data from the NRIS system. For example, see NRHP.COM's List of NRHP listings in Onondaga County, New York. You can change the state and county name in the URL to one you are interested in. Each county report from this source contains a separate tab for the Historic Districts within the county, in which it provides useful numbers of contributing and non-contributing elements in each district.
The same information should be available from the National Register Information System (NRIS), available here, but getting to the right screens to get all of the same data is not easy to figure out. To perform a name search, try here. To perform an architect search, try here. It is particularly not clear how to identify whether a given NRHP listing is a historic district vs. a building, site, structure, or object. (Using either the NRHP.COM site or the Elkman infobox generator, one can ascertain, somewhat indirectly, only whether or not a site is a historic district.)
Every Friday, the National Park Service publishes the Weekly List, which includes all actions on the National Register for the prior week(s): additions; removals; boundary increases and decreases; additional documentation; approvals of multiple covers (MPS); determinations of eligibility; and designations of NHLs. The Weekly List can be found here. Since July 2008, the weekly update has included one featured listing. These are listed at National Register of Historic Places featured properties and districts.
Elkman NRHP infobox generator
For editing new articles on NRHPs, there's a useful tool created and maintained by Elkman, a WP:NRHP member. This is the Elkman NRHP infobox generator, which creates the NRHP infobox for a new page, which you cut and paste into your new article. It serves up data from one big download of NRIS data that was performed on March 13, 2009. The March 13 date should be left in the footnote reference provided as part of its output.
Also, the new Elkman county list table generator creates a wikitable in the new/evolving format of NRHP list-tables.
Official text and photo documents
Official sources available for many NRHP sites include the NRHP text document, the corresponding NRHP photos document, and, in some states, correspondence between owners and the state and/or Federal offices involved in listing. The NRHP text document may be labelled a NRHP Registration form, or it may be labelled a NRHP Inventory/Nomination form. For NRHPs that are also National Historic Landmarks, there may be a National Historic Landmark Nomination form instead of, or in addition to, the NRHP text document. The photos are black and white. These are the official, definitive sources on some aspects of NHL sites. For example they contain official descriptions of the area which is included in the landmark, which might not be available anywhere else.
NRHP text document
- For National Historic Landmarks, especially, the National Park Service's NPS Focus search site is a good place to start. It provides access to the original text description and photos of most NRHPS that are also National Historic Landmark sites, for most or all sites that are also National Historic Sites, and for some NRHPs that are neither. Several states now have PDF scans of the nomination forms online at the NPS Focus site including, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.
Some states provide scanned copies for all of their NRHPs.
For NRHPs where a complete scanned version of the NRHP text and photos is not available on-line somewhere, the Reference Desk of the National Register of Historic Places will provide a photocopied hard copy, to be sent out by postal mail, upon request.
Multiple listings
Virtually all Multiple Property Submission cover forms (including Thematic Resources and Multiple Resource Areas) have been scanned and are available from the NRIS at this page. No information is provided by the NRIS other than a reference number, and the reference numbers are not entirely sequential, so finding the correct MPS nomination is very difficult. These links are also available at our project page, Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/MPS cover sheets, where a table has been created to include other data (name of MPS, state, and listing date) about each MPS. Not all data has been filled in yet; please consider helping to fill in this data.
National Park Service Inventory
The National Park Service has an inventory of historic park structures with pictures here.
GSA database
Multiple resources regarding historic federal government buildings under General Services Administration management may be found at Historic Buildings, which can be searched and sorted by state, architect, and other attributes.
State and territory specific sources
- Some Alaska nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For American Samoa, many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Arkansas, a searchable database http://www.arkansaspreservation.org/historic-properties/national-register/search.asp provides access to National Register summaries in considerable detail. No on-line copies of nominating documents available, but the summaries appear to quote the noms. A similar database exists for the Arkansas Register of Historic Places.
- For California, an index linking to concise site summaries may be found at the California Office of Historic Preservation. Includes NRHP and California state registry sites, but the written summaries are variable in quality. Beachcalifornia.com has summaries of state historical landmarks, including NRHP properties..
- For Colorado:
- an index linking to concise site summaries may be found at Colorado Historical Society. Includes NRHP and Colorado state registry sites. Complete
- There are PDF copies of some or all of the NRHP Registration documents available on-line. E.g., for East High School (Denver), there is this: National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet. Searching on "East High School" at this search screen finds that one. Is there an open index / main directory to view all of the available PDF's somewhere?
- A list of all the removals is here
- For Connecticut:
- Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation - Diverse resources on historic preservation in the state. I've found information on some NRHP listings in their newsletter (but to find things, you may need to use Google with "site:cttrust.org"). See this page for information on state and local historic designations and their relationship to the NRHP.
- Historic Buildings of Connecticut - Descriptions and photos of many historic properties in the state, many of which are on the National Register or are contributing properties in historic districts.
- For Delaware many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For the District of Columbia, many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Guam many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Hawaii:
- Many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- The State Historic Preservation Division's webite has a list by county of sites, some of which are not yet on the National Register. In each table is a "tax map key" which can be used to find detailed maps.
- The University of Hawaii has an on-line archive of many historic documents including articles from the Hawaiian Journal of History.
- For Illinois, http://gis.hpa.state.il.us/hargis/ a state office provides scanned copies of the NRHP text documents]. To find a property, it takes some blundering around with the query system there.
- To search, try this: at the right, click on "Query Builder", opens a new window. For "Field name", select "Property name" from the drop-down menu. Enter part or all of the name you want to find, then click "Add". Then click "Finish". There may be no noticeable effect, you may still have the same display before you, perhaps a map. But scroll down, at the bottom now there should be some text now about your property, including a link "Report".
- Hopefully you can somehow get to a screen that includes a link "Report" about the property you want. If you click on that a new window with "PROPERTY INFORMATION REPORT" opens; in that window scroll down to "Surveys of Property" section, and select "View Background Documentation", which should link to the NRHP Inventory/Nomination report for the site. At the point where you are selecting that, you can see and record a direct URL to the PDF, something like http://gis.hpa.state.il.us/hargis/PDFs/200181.pdf.
- Note other screens may include a photo and other useful information.
- For Indiana, it is the State Dept. of Natural Resources' Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology which governs. See http://www.in.gov/dnr/historic/10796.htm for some of their links.
- PDFs of National Register applications are available through the Indiana State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) system. At https://secure.in.gov/apps/dnr/shaard/welcome.html, select "Enter as a guest". For "Survey type", select pull-down option "National Register", then get to a search screen where you can find properties by county or tite of property (in the "Historic name" field). How does one link directly to a PDF file that is found this way, though?
- Currently pending, and recent previous, applications for NRHP status are available at http://www.in.gov/dnr/historic/11841.htm, and here the PDFs are directly linkable.
- For Iowa, it is the National Registry page. http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/IA/state.html where there is a map by county located.
- For Kentucky, the Kentucky Heritage Council webpages provide some info about NRHP application processes at least. Are there links to NRHP application documents anywhere there?
- For Louisiana, http://www.crt.state.la.us/hp/nhl/searchby.asp Louisiana NRHP documents are searchable here and include PDF links
- For Marshall Islands, all nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Maryland, at http://www.marylandhistoricaltrust.net/NR/ a Maryland Historical Trust searchable website provides fairly extensive information for each NRHP
- For Massachusetts, at http://mhc-macris.net/ is the Massachusetts Cultural Resources Information System (MACRIS)], the state's database of NRHP and state historic sites. As of 2/2009 it does not yet link to NRHP or other nomination documents.
- For Michigan, at http://www.mcgi.state.mi.us/hso/findlocation.asp a searchable database leads to fairly detailed summaries of NRHP properties.
- For Minnesota, there is this search screen on NRHPs, at Minnesota Historical Society. If the Reference number is known, enter it in place of the 'xxxxxxxx' at http://nrhp.mnhs.org/NRDetails.cfm?NPSNum=xxxxxxxx. Also there is a 2003 book The National Register of Historic Places in Minnesota by Mary Ann Nord available.[1]
- ^ Nord, Mary Ann (2003). The National Register of Historic Places in Minnesota. Minnesota Historical Society. ISBN 0-87351-448-3.
- For Missouri, NRHP applications are on-line, as in external link within Arthur W. and Chloe B. Cole House. See http://www.dnr.mo.gov/shpo/national.htm for Missouri NRHP info. Individual county lists of NRHP apps are available at Missouri National Register Listings page.
- For Nebraska, an index linking to concise site summaries may be found at Nebraska State Historical Society. It shows 10 regions for the state's 93 counties. One level higher is this NRHP general memu.
- For Nevada:
- Many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- The State Historic Preservation Office provides lists of the NRHPs and of Nevada state historic sites which provide some location information that is additional to what is available in the NRIS system.
- For New York State, the NYS Office of Recreation, Parks and Historic Preservation (NYSORPHP) provides scanned versions of the NRHP text documents, NRHP photos, and NRHP correspondence with owners of properties. The interface requires Javascript on your computer. In the New York's State and National Registers of Historic Places Document Imaging Project search access screen, you have to select "Basic" and enter Basic criteria such as name "Grahamsville" and county "Sullivan" in the search form, and then click over on the right at RESULTS to get the search to run. Not entirely intuitive. It may be then that a javascript icon shows up for a while, and then you typically get a list of the 3 documents available (text, photos, other). Then clicking on one of them, in Firefox at least, you get a new browser window with a wide but short scrollable window showing about one vertical inch of the scanned document. You can then choose to click on the printer icon and print to a PDF file, in order to save it on your computer and to read it more conveniently. (If you do not already have a PDF writer on your computer, you can download a free one at www.pdf995.com). The new browser window shows a hard URL that can be used provide a hard link from a wikipedia article to a specific file, such as Grahamsville Historic District NRHP text for the article Grahamsville Historic District. See wp:NRHPMOS for an example footnote reference linking the separate text, photos, and correspondence documents for one site.
- For North Dakota, many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Northern Mariana Islands, many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Ohio, the Ohio Historical Society provides very basic data (often little or nothing more than the NRIS) and sometimes a picture. Nomination forms are available, but only for a small price.
- For Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Historical Society provides illustrated summaries of NRHP properties, including MPS listings. Summaries are given for restricted address sites, and others have nomination forms available for download for free.
- For Oregon the Oregon Historic Sites Database is under development, and is stated to eventually include copies of NRHP documents. At present it is very limited in content.
- For Palau, many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Pennsylvania, the state office's ARCH system provides scanned copies of NRHP documents. In at least some cases such as for Northumberland Historic District, the scanning is incomplete (deliberately?). See wp:NRHPMOS for an example comprehensive footnote reference. Updates are no longer being posted at that website; the CRGIS website will host all updates. Large amounts of data are available with the guest password and account provided by the site.
- For Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission has a variety of online resources. There is a series of survey publications, produced a number of years ago, that documented the history of each community, then-existing NRHP listings, and potentially listable properties. There's also a state database of listed properties (including contributing properties in HDs) and a collection of information on pending nominations.
- For South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History provides summaries, photos, and scanned PDF files of NRHP nominations for all NRHPs.
- For Tennessee, the state's Department of Environment and Conservation provides NRHP docs for at least some NRHP sites on-line. The Historic Commission's main NRHP page has some listings, and others are listed in press releases, for example these 12 recent ones here and nine more recent ones here. Also there is a "Tennessee Encyclopedia on History and Culture" on-line, search here sponsored by the Tennessee Historical Society, which has articles worth linking.
- For Texas, summary information and perhaps the text from the NRHP documents (but incomplete, clearly lacking sections), is available for NRHPs in the Texas Historical Commission's THC Atlas system. Also, the Handbook of Texas [1] provides summaries and some detailed histories of historic sites. Note in citing Handbook of Texas, most articles have individual authors to credit; the Fort Concho wikipedia article contains an example footnote reference giving such credit.
- For U.S. Minor Islands, which include Wake Island and Midway Island, the nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Utah many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Virgin Islands many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- For Virginia, VLR and NRHP nomination PDFs and other materials are available, by county and independent city, at the Virginia Landmarks Registry here.
- For Washington the WISAARD GIS system provides a database, including PDFs of nominations. It only works with Internet Explorer and requires that pop-ups be enabled. The map interface is clunky and requires a lot of zooming; a simple database search would be far superior, but it works if you're patient and have some idea of Washington geography and the site you're looking for.
- For West Virginia the West Virginia Division of Culture and History provides scanned PDFs of applications sorted by county.
- For Wyoming:
- Many, if not all, nominations are available at the NPS Focus site http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/xxxxxxxx.pdf (put the eight digit NRHP reference number in place of the x's) or via the database search here.
- The Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office provides summaries of each site.
Multiple Property Submission (MPS) documents
PDFs of Multiple Property Submission documents are available from the National Register Information System (from the Main Menu, click on Documentation, then click on Multiple Covers(Historic Context)).
National Historic Landmark additional information
The National Park Services NHL search site provides access to a webpage summary for every NHL site, including for archeological sites where the NRHP text is not made available. This often including short statement of significance of site based on the NRHP text. The NHL webpage sometimes also includes current and past status information for sites that are threatened.
This NHL webpage summary is usually authoritative on the NHL name for the site, which may differ from the NRHP name for the site shown in the NRIS system. When an NRHP site is also a NHL, the NHL name should usually override the NRHP name in the NRHP infobox of an article on the site. However, awkwardly wrapped names such as "McKinley, James, House" should be unwrapped to "James McKinley House". Alternative names for a site should appear in the beginning text of the article.
This NHL webpage summary is usually authoritative on date of NHL designation, which may be manually added into the NRHP infobox generated by the Elkman infobox generator. However, there exist errors in this webpage system, which may extend to dates. Some of the errors have been reported to the National Park Service and are under review. A working list of some known or apparent errors with names of sites appears here. A similar list of issues with dates of NHL designation appears here.

Infoboxes
- {{Infobox nrhp}} - for all articles, except in the following instances:
- For lighthouses, use {{Infobox Lighthouse}} (general lighthouse template)
- For Protected areas (National Parks/Landmarks/etc.), use {{Infobox Protected area}} (general protected area template)
- For Spanish Missions, use {{Infobox Missions}} (Spanish Missions template)
- For all churches, synagogues or other buildings with a religious purpose, use {{infobox religious building}} (has an optional section for NRHP information)
- For bridges, use {{infobox bridge}}
Generally speaking, the protected areas infobox is not congruent with the scope of this project unless the Historic Place is managed by the U.S. Government.

some but not all National Park Service photos are public domain
Some National Park Service webpages (within nps.gov domain) include photos that are NPS-owned and are public domain. But the NPS is clear that it uses, with permission, some copyrighted pictures, and those do not go into the public domain just because the NPS uses them. Some say from the "National Register Collection." Those would be okay to use. There may be different ways for them to say it, that they own the negatives, that they have ownership and put it in the public domain. The National Park Service copyright-related policy statement, at http://www.nps.gov/disclaimer.htm states, under Ownership, that "Information presented on this website, unless otherwise indicated, is considered in the public domain. It may may be distributed or copied as is permitted by the law. Not all information on this website has been created or is owned by the NPS. If you wish to use any non-NPS material, you must seek permission directly from the owning (or holding) sources. NPS shall have the unlimited right to use for any purpose, free of any charge, all information submitted to NPS via this site except those submissions made under separate legal contract. NPS shall be free to use, for any purpose, any ideas, concepts, or techniques contained in information provided to NPS through this site."(bolding added by me) So they are clear that some of the images they use are NOT public domain, but ones that are suggested to be NPS-owned are public domain.
Addendum: Unfortunately for many wikipedia editors, there is an ERRONEOUS message in the NPS Focus computer system that states "Public domain" for all photographs, whether PD or not. Any photo that has credit given to a photographer or a state employee or any other non-Federal organization is not PD. Further, in June 2009, User:Acroterion reports contacting the NPS and getting that it is up to users, not them, to check for copyright status, in this diff.
